What Is Coaching?

Coaching is an action-oriented process that focuses on solutions to help propel you forward. Your coach will listen, ask questions, and encourage as you explore what matters most to you.

Through a process of listening and asking questions, your coach will help you identify challenges in your professional and personal life as you gain awareness of who you are, define what is important to you, and decide what actions are needed. The coaching process helps you pinpoint key challenges and action steps to address them; identify mental obstacles and how to overcome them; and uncover potential that is untapped, all the while building your self-confidence and motivation.

Why Would You Need It?

Psychologist Daniel Goleman, who is best known for his work on emotional intelligence, wrote a classic HBR article years ago called, "Leadership that Gets Results".  I remember it well because it was popular at the time with our students in the leadership course when I was a professor at the Wharton School.  In this article, he presented six essential leadership styles, one of which was coaching.  Goleman's research studies showed that the coaching practice demonstrated "markedly positive" results on performance, company culture, and even the bottom line; yet coaching was the least used leadership style.  Why? Leaders who were interviewed said they just didn't have time to  coach or be coached.

Expert coach, Michael Bungay Stanier, says that when we learn new things (such as taking courses here on the Intercultural Academy for Global Leadership) we "...don't likely spend much time figuring out how to translate the new insights into action so you'd do things differently...When you got back to the office, the status quo flexed its impressive muscles, got you in a headlock and soon had you doing things exactly the way you'd done them before."

So What?

So why is coaching important?  The essence of coaching helps you unlock your potential.  It's an empowering process of thinking and working through attitudinal and behavioral changes that YOU come up with and decide to work on.

The Intercultural Academy for Global Leadership's coaching model follows these three steps that will help you be a stronger leader who goes from good to great:

Awareness

Awareness starts with knowing yourself - your preferences for communicating, for working, and for being...and then how you relate to others...We begin to look at what are the triggers that set you off?  Or the unconscious fears that keep you from moving forward? Or the sabotaging inner voice?

Knowledge

Building knowledge is critical as you become curious and open to learning new things, which can include: How do you react and respond to certain stimuli? How can you develop proactive responses based upon deeper knowledge? And what are the areas you want to work on for self-improvement?

Action

It's not enough to cultivate awareness and build your knowledge - it is critical to put into practice what you are learning and to develop skills as you build a repertoire of responses across a wide variety of situations and contexts.  You will develop strategies for successful engagement.
